Facing Charges in Houston or Harris County?

Harris County has one of the largest criminal court systems in the country. If you’ve been arrested anywhere in the county, from Houston to Katy, Pasadena, Baytown, Humble, or Cypress, your case will most likely be heard at the Harris County Criminal Justice Center downtown.

Henry K. Nguyen’s office is in the Heights, a short drive from the courthouse. He is a member of the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association and has defended clients in Harris County courts for years.

How Harris County Criminal Cases Work

Misdemeanors are heard in the Harris County Criminal Courts at Law. Felonies are heard in the district courts. Cases often take several court settings to resolve, and what happens between settings (reviewing evidence, filing motions, and negotiating with prosecutors) is where much of the work gets done.

Diversion and Pretrial Intervention Programs

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office offers several programs that can lead to a dismissal for eligible people, including pretrial intervention for some first-time DWI cases and for certain first-time retail theft cases. Eligibility depends on the charge, your criminal history, and the facts of your case, and the programs change over time. A diversion program isn’t always the best option. If there are real problems with the State’s evidence, fighting the case may be better. We’ll go over both paths with you. For DWI cases, see Harris County DWI Pretrial Intervention.
